There is an edge in life.
A very scary edge.
It's one we don't often face.
Yet it is always there just beyond our thoughts.
Sometimes we are thrust into that edge.
Not by choice, but by circumstance.
That edge, is the edge between life and death.
The edge of the end of this life.
When we are young, that edge seems so far away.
We are healthy and without a care, so it is hard to imagine the edge.
Maybe we loose a parent, of a close friend.
For some of us, the edge comes to us because of a life threatening illness.
We then stand on that edge, wondering what waits fro us on the other side.
Is death the end? Is it a new beginning?
When the edge is far away, we never think it.
Yet once we see it so clearly and so closely, we can't stop thinking about it.
The odd thing about that edge is that we can use it to move us, or we can allow it to stop us.
To stop us from living more fully.
Stopping us from the happiness we can still have until that last breath.
Sucking all the joy and experience we can out of every day we have left.
The edge of life and death can be scary.
At the same time it can be liberating.
Knowing that there is a boundary to our time here.
Staying on just the right side of it.
Yet one day, no matter how hard we try to be careful, we all will slip over that edge into the great unknown.
When we recognize that edge for what it is, maybe we can appreciate what we have here all that much more.
Until there are no more breaths to be had.
Have you seen that edge?
Can you face it without allowing it to take your breath away?
