In this episode of The Expansion Room, I share my personal 22-year journey of bridging science, spirituality, and soul work in the healing process. From my early years rooted in psychotherapy and evidence-based practices, to my awakening through yoga, mindfulness, and psychedelics, and finally into the deeper realm of soul work — this is the story of how I learned to integrate it all.
You’ll hear how science gave me structure, spirituality gave me meaning, and soul work gave me depth and purpose. I also share my vision for the future of healing — where therapy, coaching, psychedelics, and integrative wellness come together to create transformation at the deepest level. If you’re on your own journey of growth, healing, or awakening, I hope this episode inspires you to reflect on the threads of science, spirit, and soul in your life — and how they can be woven together to help you expand.

During the first segment of today's episode Shervon tells us about her journey into her current field of work, and how different aspects of her life helped to shape that path. One of the big factors in her life path was how as a teen she was selected to be a peer counselor who helped to talk with other students her age about mental and physical health.
The second segment kicks off with Shervon telling us about how she began to realise that she too suffered from some mental and physical health problems, and how the stress from working 2 jobs and the events of 9-11 had raised her anxiety. Shervon then tells us about a realization she had while working one day and how practicing meditation and breathing helped her realize that there were more ways to help people than through becoming a doctor.f
Shervon begins the third segment by telling us to dig a little deeper into who we actually are, finding our authentic self, core values, passions, what lights us up? Who are we behind the traumas that we may have experienced? She then tells us that finding out who we really are can take years, and relates that to how during the first 15 years of her private practice how she always squirreled herself away in a small office, and never would have dreamt of doing live shows or group therapy sessions.
The final segment ties together everything that Shervon talked about during the first 3 segments by telling us that more people than we realize are suffering from some form of mental health issue, be it big or small. She then goes on to tell us that there are more options than just medication. How there is yoga, breathwork, therapy, and psychotherapy and how all of them have their own benefits, and positive effects.
00:01:07.020 --> 00:01:11.299 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Hello, and welcome back to the expansion room.
00:01:11.680 --> 00:01:29.120 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And today, we are going to be doing something a little bit different. I did not invite a guest for this episode because I wanted to talk more about my own journey into the work
00:01:29.310 --> 00:01:38.180 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I do in the world, the realm of space that I am in. People often ask me, how did I get here?
00:01:38.290 --> 00:01:39.740 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And so.
00:01:39.750 --> 00:01:55.240 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I decided today that we will pull the curtains back, so to speak, and share more about my own journey of how I became a therapist and do the spiritual and soul work that I do with clients.
00:01:55.240 --> 00:02:11.769 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And what my own process and journey has been. So today's episode is basically my journey through science and spirit, how psychotherapy, spirituality, and soul work has really shaped my path.
00:02:13.260 --> 00:02:20.599 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: So, let's start from kind of the beginning.
00:02:21.020 --> 00:02:28.199 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And as you're listening to my star… my story, I would invite you to reflect
00:02:28.200 --> 00:02:45.870 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: On your own life, to see where there are threads in your life that might be woven together in similar ways, so that you're able to also bring something to the world that maybe has been in the back of your mind.
00:02:46.250 --> 00:02:49.920 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: So, let's go all the way back to the early years.
00:02:50.180 --> 00:02:56.320 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I was raised in New York City, and I am a child of the 80s.
00:02:56.520 --> 00:03:00.570 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And during the 80s,
00:03:00.940 --> 00:03:12.030 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: was, like, the rise in a lot of things. One of them was the AIDS crisis. I kind of came of age in that time.
00:03:12.170 --> 00:03:25.439 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I grew up in Queens, went to Forest Hills High School, and somewhere, I believe, in my sophomore or junior year, the school began a program,
00:03:26.100 --> 00:03:30.740 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: That invited other teens to help counsel
00:03:31.230 --> 00:03:39.310 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: teens that were having a hard time. It was a peer counseling program. So I was invited by our guidance counselor.
00:03:39.530 --> 00:03:43.159 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: To offer this kind of service.
00:03:43.160 --> 00:04:00.950 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And I guess they thought I was super responsible. Me and 2 or 3 other kids were invited, to be trained and work with our peers in this way. And we talked about things like depression and anxiety, pressures in school, pressures at home.
00:04:00.950 --> 00:04:09.090 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Sex, sexuality, and yes, the AIDS crisis had just started, so there was this fear a little bit around that.
00:04:09.370 --> 00:04:28.479 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And so here I was, this teenager, taking on a responsibility that I didn't really think of as a responsibility. It just kind of made sense. I was already talking to friends about things and giving advice, and wasn't really thinking that much of it.
00:04:28.990 --> 00:04:37.749 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I grew up in a very, christian, fundamentalist Christian household.
00:04:38.120 --> 00:04:52.200 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Grew up in the Pentecostal denomination, and so I remember it being a denomination of lots of rules and restriction. There was definitely a mysticism about
00:04:52.250 --> 00:05:04.569 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: that denomination that I did not appreciate as I was a young person, but as I became an adult and gone down this path, and I can now look back, yes.
00:05:06.040 --> 00:05:22.830 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: But there… my father, stepfather, and mother are all ordained ministers at this point. And so, there were a lot of things that I did not do, or was not allowed to do, and things that were spoke
00:05:23.050 --> 00:05:31.679 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: about in-church space that, I was not allowed to be. It was right around this time
00:05:32.090 --> 00:05:39.219 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: junior year, 16 years old, that I figured out that I was also bisexual. And…
00:05:39.460 --> 00:05:57.370 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: couldn't really talk about that, at least definitely not in my household, and there was only one friend I told, in school, and he happened to be one of the other peers that was invited in for the peer counseling program. So he was the only person that knew.
00:05:57.380 --> 00:06:13.849 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And we had many hours of conversation around that. So he, in a lot of ways, was my counselor while I was figuring that process out. And I was determined to not come out until I was in college, and that is exactly what I did.
00:06:13.990 --> 00:06:14.740 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: But…
00:06:15.850 --> 00:06:24.379 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: A few months later, once we started this program at my high school, I was also working down the street
00:06:24.390 --> 00:06:37.519 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And a part-time job, working with seniors at the local community center. And that community center decided to also start a peer counseling program.
00:06:37.550 --> 00:06:46.449 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And for that one, I was invited and got trained and got paid for. So, here I was in high school.
00:06:47.100 --> 00:06:57.870 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: offering peer counseling services in two different spaces. One of them paid, and… Learning so much.
00:06:59.180 --> 00:07:05.459 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: So… the bug hit, and I didn't even realize it at that point.
00:07:05.850 --> 00:07:16.900 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: So fast forward, I go on to college, and I thought I was going to be a doctor, because I really wanted to help people. I wanted to help people heal.
00:07:17.240 --> 00:07:18.480 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And…
00:07:19.320 --> 00:07:32.160 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I was in pre-med. I'd gone off to Connecticut, started school, and in my first semester of sophomore year, I took a class that changed my trajectory.
00:07:32.620 --> 00:07:39.060 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And I changed my major. I changed it to Religious Studies and Sociology.
00:07:39.500 --> 00:07:44.640 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And studied primarily sociology of African American society.
00:07:44.910 --> 00:07:52.380 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And… I did so… Because I realized something.
00:07:52.590 --> 00:08:01.169 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: That spirituality played a big role In one's mental health.
00:08:01.650 --> 00:08:04.470 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I didn't have language for it yet.
00:08:04.890 --> 00:08:17.130 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: But something about that… idea of connecting religion and mental health made sense to me at that point.
00:08:18.020 --> 00:08:34.149 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And with that major, I got to study all the world's religions, and really understood, came to understand, especially since I had grown up in such a fundamental Christian
00:08:34.380 --> 00:08:43.339 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: upbringing, that there was a thread that actually run… ran through and runs through all the world religions.
00:08:44.130 --> 00:08:50.029 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: At the mystical level, They're all very much so the same or similar.
00:08:50.800 --> 00:08:59.189 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And I started to then see people in a different way. That we, in some ways, are all connected.
00:08:59.470 --> 00:09:12.939 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Still didn't have a full understanding. Here I was, sophomore year into junior year, and eventually senior year, but that was the start. Those were my early leanings. And…
00:09:13.560 --> 00:09:20.780 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I didn't have a lot of spaces where I could talk about these things, and I was…
00:09:21.740 --> 00:09:30.860 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Still trying to connect the dots, but there was a connection for me of mental health, and spirituality.
00:09:31.060 --> 00:09:34.629 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And I was no longer moving towards becoming a doctor.
00:09:35.630 --> 00:09:52.110 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: So when I graduated from college, I went on to become a case manager, like a community-based case manager, and I worked also at suicide hotlines. Two in particular when I was…
00:09:52.160 --> 00:09:57.500 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: In Connecticut still, and then when I moved down here, in Maryland.
00:09:57.690 --> 00:10:07.750 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And that work in particular is what led me to decide to definitely get a master's degree in counseling.
00:10:08.500 --> 00:10:14.060 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I was not looking to do a degree necessarily in psychology or so… or,
00:10:14.550 --> 00:10:16.730 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Social work, clinical social work.
00:10:16.880 --> 00:10:30.100 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And so I kind of waited a while and allowed myself to work in community and connect with people, in deep ways, especially on those hotlines. When you're talking to someone.
00:10:30.280 --> 00:10:39.780 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: at their… Lowest moment that they are thinking about taking their own lives.
00:10:40.180 --> 00:10:59.800 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: there's a vulnerability, an intimacy there that forms. And so it was in that work that I realized, yeah, I want to become a licensed therapist, but none of the programs that I found initially really made me excited to move forward with them.
00:11:00.080 --> 00:11:04.130 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Until I found the pastoral Counseling Program.
00:11:04.210 --> 00:11:22.700 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: at Loyola College here in Maryland, and as soon as I read the description, it clicked. It made perfect sense to me that bringing mental health and spirituality together was going to be my path.
00:11:23.230 --> 00:11:34.470 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: that program stood at the intersection, for me, of mental health, which is what I knew, as well as spirituality.
00:11:34.630 --> 00:11:40.629 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And my own upbringing, and my own understanding of religion by that point.
00:11:41.490 --> 00:11:44.700 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: So I started that program in, I believe.
00:11:44.850 --> 00:11:50.510 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: 2001, literally 2 weeks before 9-11.
00:11:50.840 --> 00:11:56.349 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And so, I mention that because It was so pivotal.
00:11:56.590 --> 00:12:08.129 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Right? I had waited all this time, got into this program, and then the world is reeling, especially the United States, is reeling from…
00:12:08.330 --> 00:12:10.370 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: these attacks.
00:12:11.400 --> 00:12:18.579 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And our school's response… Was amazing, because it was a… it was a lot of prayer.
00:12:18.940 --> 00:12:20.530 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: meditation.
00:12:21.250 --> 00:12:25.640 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Holding each other in space to grieve.
00:12:27.370 --> 00:12:32.689 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I felt like if I was in a different program, I wouldn't have gotten that opportunity.
00:12:33.470 --> 00:12:42.009 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And so… it really solidified for me that I knew that I had chosen the right program.
00:12:44.500 --> 00:13:01.729 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: during the time I was there, I learned the structured, evidence-based theories and practices that all therapists are supposed to learn in order to become a licensed therapist or licensed psychotherapist.
00:13:01.750 --> 00:13:13.680 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: But it also gave me the understanding, the sense of how to invite in spirituality into the therapy room.
00:13:13.780 --> 00:13:21.979 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: With and for my clients, Where other therapy training programs did not offer.
00:13:22.210 --> 00:13:26.969 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Right? And so, coming out of that program, I could both…
00:13:27.700 --> 00:13:37.930 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Help people understand their thoughts, beliefs, and feelings, and their behaviors, and learn how to, in challenging situations.
00:13:38.090 --> 00:13:47.080 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Employ healthy coping skills, as well as help them to know themselves.
00:13:47.340 --> 00:13:59.530 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: on a deeper spiritual level that I just didn't feel like I was going to get in another program. So I have loved the fact that that was the program that found me.
00:13:59.750 --> 00:14:06.290 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And gave me the foundation of the work that I do in the world.
00:14:07.460 --> 00:14:26.860 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Now, even though I had that foundation based in evidence-based science, of course, there was a growing part of me that really started to acknowledge that not everything could be worked out in talk therapy.
00:14:27.790 --> 00:14:39.019 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: especially trauma, deep trauma experiences, I started to realize in that first few years of me being a therapist.
00:14:39.070 --> 00:14:52.410 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And mind you, I opened my part-time private practice almost as soon as I graduated with that degree, with the supervision of an older, more established therapist.
00:14:52.500 --> 00:15:01.470 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: But I started to realize in those first few years, I was like, there's more that… I need…
00:15:01.620 --> 00:15:15.870 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: In order to work with people who have deep trauma in their backgrounds, especially if it's the kind of trauma that was ongoing, maybe even in childhood.
00:15:16.660 --> 00:15:26.800 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And so that spirituality For me, had to play a bigger role in the therapy space.
00:15:27.390 --> 00:15:35.310 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And so, I began the next phase of my journey by looking for,
00:15:35.420 --> 00:15:41.719 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: what could I bring in that would be, more spiritual as well as somatic?
00:15:42.100 --> 00:15:46.499 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: So, we're about to take a break, and so when we come back.
00:15:46.770 --> 00:15:50.760 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: We'll talk about that next phase of my journey.
00:18:05.770 --> 00:18:12.010 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: So, welcome back to the Expansion Room, and this week, I am talking about my journey
00:18:12.800 --> 00:18:29.189 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: over the last 22 or more, actually, years of becoming the kinds of therapists that I, am today, and, why I work with the people that I work with today. And so…
00:18:29.830 --> 00:18:39.090 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: in moving through the pastoral counseling program here in Maryland at Loyola.
00:18:39.950 --> 00:18:54.240 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I found that, not only the stress of being in a master's program while having a full-time job, as well as the shift in the environment.
00:18:54.240 --> 00:19:01.630 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: As the country was still reeling from 9-11, and then some other stressors in my life.
00:19:01.700 --> 00:19:05.369 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I had started to develop
00:19:06.070 --> 00:19:21.139 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: some health issues, and some of them related to mental health, anxiety. I'd figured out by then that I had lived with anxiety for a long time, but growing up in the family I grew up in, of course, we didn't use that word.
00:19:21.140 --> 00:19:29.290 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: But I have lived with, like, a low-grade anxiety that was a little bit more elevated since 9-11.
00:19:29.500 --> 00:19:40.279 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: as well, as I had physical symptoms that later we found out was attributed to, the diagnosis of fibromyalgia.
00:19:40.640 --> 00:19:58.509 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: So those… those… the… the experience that I was having, those symptoms were mostly roving pain, joint pain, muscle pain, that was non, explicable, as well as brain fog.
00:19:58.960 --> 00:20:16.950 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: fatigue, those kind of symptoms that were popping up for me. And this had started right around age 30. So, as I experienced those things, and doctors couldn't quite tell me what was going on,
00:20:17.130 --> 00:20:23.570 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I started to turn inward and pay more attention to what I needed.
00:20:24.280 --> 00:20:28.750 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And it was at that time that meditation
00:20:29.220 --> 00:20:33.690 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Popped up on my radar in a more significant way.
00:20:34.690 --> 00:20:47.020 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: as I was moving through the program, not only were we taking, of course, therapy theory courses, right, but we were also taking courses, that
00:20:47.260 --> 00:21:04.329 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: helped us to step more into mindfulness practice, which was a totally new thing for me. And so, as I stepped more into mindfulness, and then meditation, I also started my own meditation practice.
00:21:04.840 --> 00:21:12.899 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: got back on my yoga mat. I had done yoga off and on in my 20s, which started actually in high school.
00:21:13.050 --> 00:21:19.570 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And so I eventually got back on my yoga mat, and started to inwardly
00:21:20.050 --> 00:21:25.980 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: drop in and pay attention and ask myself, what do I need today, basically? Right?
00:21:26.100 --> 00:21:36.280 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And… In doing that, I started to notice a shift in my symptoms experience, that…
00:21:36.450 --> 00:21:47.110 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: The intensity of pain had started to lower, or even the incidence of pain had started to decrease.
00:21:47.470 --> 00:22:00.700 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And so I just kept doing what I was doing. I kept exploring the practices that I was learning in the training program. And it really started to help.
00:22:01.840 --> 00:22:06.120 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: That was my first aha. That…
00:22:06.620 --> 00:22:11.590 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: A spiritual practice can have physical effects.
00:22:12.120 --> 00:22:15.660 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: As well as mental effects on the body.
00:22:16.730 --> 00:22:27.749 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Now, I had mentioned that I had a full-time job while I was in school. And so, when I graduated.
00:22:28.060 --> 00:22:31.339 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I also changed full-time jobs.
00:22:31.510 --> 00:22:35.769 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And I was no longer working at this suicide hotline.
00:22:36.490 --> 00:22:39.059 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: But I was working for the federal government.
00:22:39.900 --> 00:22:42.860 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: That's a whole different stressor. We won't go there today.
00:22:43.030 --> 00:22:52.180 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: But in my job one day, I realized, while I was still practicing meditation, and still practicing yoga.
00:22:52.610 --> 00:22:57.120 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I was at my desk one day, and I realized…
00:22:57.390 --> 00:23:05.360 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: that my shoulders were raised a little bit, right? Shoulders were raised, and I was tense.
00:23:05.510 --> 00:23:10.650 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And I was breathing in this, what I now know is a shallow breath.
00:23:10.820 --> 00:23:13.340 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Right? It was a shortened breath.
00:23:14.620 --> 00:23:23.729 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I had already known enough about mindfulness practice that it extended to the breath.
00:23:24.750 --> 00:23:30.599 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I had not yet… started breathwork, but I took a deep breath that day.
00:23:30.870 --> 00:23:34.650 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And just allowed myself to notice what I felt.
00:23:34.940 --> 00:23:36.400 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Then I took another.
00:23:37.200 --> 00:23:39.360 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And allowed myself to notice.
00:23:42.040 --> 00:23:43.370 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And then another.
00:23:43.500 --> 00:23:46.710 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And I realized my shoulders relaxed.
00:23:48.180 --> 00:23:49.080 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Right?
00:23:49.220 --> 00:23:53.960 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And my breath… became less shallow.
00:23:56.720 --> 00:24:03.390 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: It enabled me to have a thought that, oh, my clients could use this.
00:24:04.090 --> 00:24:04.980 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Right.
00:24:06.380 --> 00:24:11.410 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: as I had gravitated in my 20s, I had…
00:24:11.800 --> 00:24:18.109 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Become less and less enchanted with institutionalized church.
00:24:18.620 --> 00:24:29.529 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And was becoming more interested in studying the otherworld religions more deeply than I had, in my undergrad years.
00:24:29.650 --> 00:24:32.590 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And so here it is now, I'm post…
00:24:33.040 --> 00:24:38.170 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: master's degree, and I'm going back to some of the,
00:24:38.580 --> 00:24:51.320 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: religious, religions that I had studied in my youth, and all of them always brought me back to Eastern philosophies. So if there are past lives, I truly believe my past lives were in the East.
00:24:51.410 --> 00:25:02.940 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And so those yoga philosophies, led to all of the yoga practices eventually for me, including breathwork.
00:25:03.350 --> 00:25:13.810 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Breathwork became a powerful tool that I could use not only in my own life, but also with my clients who had anxiety.
00:25:14.930 --> 00:25:25.649 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: When they would come to session stressed, I would teach them A box breath, or… The ratio of 4…
00:25:26.030 --> 00:25:31.160 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Counts inhale, and 4 counts exhale.
00:25:31.370 --> 00:25:32.260 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Right?
00:25:32.390 --> 00:25:41.290 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Enabling them to realize they had the power To also control their anxiety.
00:25:41.760 --> 00:25:46.259 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: For me, breathwork was this tangible thing.
00:25:46.430 --> 00:25:49.920 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: that I and anyone else could do.
00:25:50.140 --> 00:25:53.279 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: In the moment that they felt anxious.
00:25:53.550 --> 00:26:00.549 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: In order to decrease their experience of anxiety in a physical way.
00:26:01.510 --> 00:26:20.460 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And so, it was at that point in my career that I started looking for a yoga therapy program. Some program that would teach me the skills that would help to… that I could help patients or clients.
00:26:20.630 --> 00:26:28.350 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: To use semantically, so that we could know how to, shift
00:26:29.180 --> 00:26:34.440 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: our state of being at any given time. And so I found that program
00:26:35.040 --> 00:26:43.539 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Through Breathing Deeply, yoga therapy school, and it's in upstate New York. So…
00:26:43.880 --> 00:26:57.980 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: For 2 years, I was going back to upstate New York for week-long trainings in the various aspects of yoga therapy. It was a very powerful
00:26:58.110 --> 00:27:08.009 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Training for me in a very powerful time for me, in my life, because each thing that they talked
00:27:08.520 --> 00:27:16.100 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: From how to use asana, For mental health, breathwork for mental health.
00:27:16.280 --> 00:27:23.190 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And then this powerful thing that I still use even today for
00:27:23.360 --> 00:27:31.489 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: ending yoga classes, as well as working with, clients for trauma, around trauma, is Yoga Nidra.
00:27:33.050 --> 00:27:36.950 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Everything that they brought… to us.
00:27:37.430 --> 00:27:41.120 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I would work on… for myself.
00:27:41.230 --> 00:27:45.430 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: As well as, for clients.
00:27:45.620 --> 00:27:50.389 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I had an experience with a client, which I think I mentioned in a previous
00:27:50.590 --> 00:28:02.209 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: episode who had PTSD and had had a flashback, and we switched from talk therapy to yoga, Yoga Nidra.
00:28:02.770 --> 00:28:11.150 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And a little bit of yoga asana on the mat was in there, because she was also a practicing yogi.
00:28:12.150 --> 00:28:22.840 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Four weeks of Yoga Nidra without having to shift her medication in any way helped her get back to a state of balance.
00:28:23.040 --> 00:28:26.369 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: the state of balance sheet had before that flashback.
00:28:26.520 --> 00:28:37.019 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And so, that program taught me that there was so much more healing available to all of us.
00:28:37.660 --> 00:28:39.870 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: More even than just…
00:28:40.160 --> 00:28:50.149 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: talk therapy, right? More even than the theories that I had been trained on, the evidence-based science.
00:28:50.750 --> 00:28:56.780 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Since I've graduated from that training program at Loyola.
00:28:57.290 --> 00:29:01.269 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: We have now seen the research roll out.
00:29:01.840 --> 00:29:09.040 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: About how mindfulness can help shift mental state.
00:29:09.270 --> 00:29:22.210 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And so, it's like the science kind of caught up with where I was already going, which really rocked my world when I started to see those articles.
00:29:22.420 --> 00:29:28.720 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: So my yoga practice and all of the mindfulness components encompassed in it
00:29:28.900 --> 00:29:33.249 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Also led me to soul work.
00:29:34.230 --> 00:29:35.759 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And so…
00:29:36.080 --> 00:29:47.379 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: when we come back from this break, we'll talk more about soul work, or what is also called psychedelic integration. So, come on back.
00:31:53.880 --> 00:32:09.330 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Hello, and welcome back to the Expansion Room, where today we are talking about my journey to the work that I do today in the world. So, I am a psychotherapist.
00:32:09.790 --> 00:32:12.870 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I am also an integration coach.
00:32:13.310 --> 00:32:26.300 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: As well as a yoga therapist and psychedelic therapist. So, how did I get here? And so, so far, we've talked about what brought me to…
00:32:26.590 --> 00:32:30.100 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Grad school.
00:32:30.310 --> 00:32:44.550 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: and brought me to, become a psychotherapist. And we've talked about what brought me to yoga therapy school, and why I began to integrate
00:32:44.570 --> 00:32:53.099 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Mindfulness practices into my therapy program with some of my clients.
00:32:53.580 --> 00:33:10.010 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Both have helped me immensely as an individual, but then also I was able to work with other people around those things. And so in this segment, we'll talk more about psychedelic integration, or what we also like to call soul work.
00:33:10.410 --> 00:33:20.829 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And soul work refers to the personal and spiritual journey of self-discovery, growth, and inner healing.
00:33:21.390 --> 00:33:25.479 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And when people make the decision
00:33:25.590 --> 00:33:31.330 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: To consciously step into psychedelic therapy.
00:33:31.660 --> 00:33:36.080 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Or even microdosing psychedelics.
00:33:36.910 --> 00:33:43.119 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: There is something powerful that happens, because it is different than…
00:33:43.900 --> 00:33:52.270 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Using psychedelic medicines in a, social or recreational way.
00:33:53.070 --> 00:34:01.739 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: They are powerful medicines of transformation, and when you can come to them consciously within an intention.
00:34:03.170 --> 00:34:05.329 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: It can then change your life.
00:34:05.430 --> 00:34:16.080 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And then… Following that experience, stepping into integration, which is the powerful work that I love to do.
00:34:16.429 --> 00:34:28.530 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Where you've really… process what happened in that experience. And… How to apply That to your life.
00:34:29.150 --> 00:34:37.959 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Maybe how to… Step away from or let go of something as you move in and towards something else.
00:34:38.500 --> 00:34:42.580 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: So that's the power of the soul work.
00:34:43.650 --> 00:34:51.789 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: It is often described as a psycho-spiritual path, Because it integrates the psychological.
00:34:52.370 --> 00:34:56.809 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: As well as the spiritual dimensions of who we are.
00:34:57.530 --> 00:35:02.760 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And so that's what drew me in to this kind of work.
00:35:03.040 --> 00:35:06.150 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: It's almost like the next level.
00:35:06.500 --> 00:35:11.060 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: up to what I was already offering.
00:35:12.120 --> 00:35:19.589 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: psychedelic work, Is the uncovering of one's true essence and purpose.
00:35:19.770 --> 00:35:22.729 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: As well as potential in the world.
00:35:23.450 --> 00:35:28.080 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Some of the key aspects of soul work is self-discovery.
00:35:28.700 --> 00:35:37.380 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Finding your authentic self, your core values, your passions, what lights you up?
00:35:39.180 --> 00:35:41.079 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Who are you?
00:35:41.720 --> 00:35:47.460 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Behind the traumas that you have experienced in your life.
00:35:49.620 --> 00:35:56.370 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: We all have experienced some level of little t or big T traumas.
00:35:58.020 --> 00:36:05.720 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And a lot of us are defined, or define ourselves by those traumas. But who are we really
00:36:06.510 --> 00:36:09.469 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: When we pull away the mask of the trauma.
00:36:10.040 --> 00:36:12.809 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Who are we behind the trauma?
00:36:13.950 --> 00:36:17.070 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: That's the self-discovery, right?
00:36:17.580 --> 00:36:24.619 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Healing of these traumas, the emotional wounds, the fears, the unconscious
00:36:24.890 --> 00:36:28.709 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: patterns. Some people like to call that shadow work.
00:36:29.310 --> 00:36:37.659 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Right? And so, stepping into psychedelics allows for this shadow work to come to the surface.
00:36:37.760 --> 00:36:39.429 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And be healed.
00:36:40.540 --> 00:36:49.749 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Integration is the striving for the alignment, right, of the different aspects
00:36:49.880 --> 00:36:53.769 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Of our lives. Of who we are.
00:36:54.230 --> 00:37:00.200 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Between our thoughts, our beliefs, Actions and our behaviors.
00:37:01.510 --> 00:37:04.390 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: The values in our lives.
00:37:05.630 --> 00:37:11.939 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: How do we embody All of these different aspects of who we are.
00:37:13.620 --> 00:37:18.739 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And then there's… For a lot of people, connection of purpose.
00:37:19.570 --> 00:37:27.080 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Like, what am I here to do? A deeper understanding of one's meaning in this life.
00:37:27.530 --> 00:37:33.200 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Right? So if you have the experience of the healing, you have this
00:37:33.360 --> 00:37:37.740 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: profound self-discovery, right? And then you can…
00:37:38.730 --> 00:37:48.439 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Integrate all the parts of yourself, and embody who you truly are, then you can find a sense of purpose.
00:37:50.790 --> 00:37:57.739 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Some of the practices that are common in soul work are meditation, right?
00:37:58.170 --> 00:38:02.419 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Connecting with nature, getting out in nature.
00:38:03.270 --> 00:38:06.079 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Mindfulness practices as a whole.
00:38:08.000 --> 00:38:16.979 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Journaling, creative expression, therapy and coaching.
00:38:19.210 --> 00:38:24.180 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Let's see, I think that's it for now that I can think of.
00:38:24.860 --> 00:38:33.390 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I find that soul work also allows for a new level of self-compassion.
00:38:34.930 --> 00:38:39.850 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: As a therapist, I can still be…
00:38:39.960 --> 00:38:45.350 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Amazed by the level of negative self-talk.
00:38:45.520 --> 00:38:49.280 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: That so many people have going on in their head.
00:38:51.190 --> 00:38:59.900 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: The kind of negative self-talk that they wouldn't say to a friend, or even a child, But they say…
00:39:00.280 --> 00:39:01.680 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: to themselves.
00:39:02.400 --> 00:39:06.980 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And when you step into this kind of work.
00:39:07.430 --> 00:39:14.529 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: There's a level of self-compassion and gratitude that emerges.
00:39:15.250 --> 00:39:22.399 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And that level of compassion starts to expand into your whole life.
00:39:23.260 --> 00:39:25.039 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And into the world.
00:39:26.810 --> 00:39:30.540 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: It's a shift.
00:39:30.680 --> 00:39:37.329 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: almost in personality. I know for myself, when I stepped into this work in training.
00:39:38.910 --> 00:39:44.850 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I had always acknowledged or seen myself as an introvert.
00:39:46.270 --> 00:39:51.429 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: one who did not like to be out in front of anything, I've…
00:39:52.160 --> 00:40:06.900 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: spent a lot of years, maybe the first 15, 18 years of my private practice, squirreled away in a tiny little room, talking one-on-one with clients. I didn't even like to run groups, because I was just way too many people in a room.
00:40:09.110 --> 00:40:12.489 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: the work that I've done on myself.
00:40:13.250 --> 00:40:17.880 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Soul work through psychedelics and psychedelic integration.
00:40:18.550 --> 00:40:28.760 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: shifted my personality just a little bit. At least enough for me to say yes, To doing a podcast.
00:40:28.920 --> 00:40:29.979 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Like this.
00:40:31.320 --> 00:40:37.569 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: 5 years ago, even 3 years ago, this would have been an absolute no.
00:40:39.140 --> 00:40:46.679 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: So… The shift for me has been, like, this expansion.
00:40:46.910 --> 00:40:51.180 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Right? This opening up more to the world.
00:40:51.750 --> 00:40:58.620 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And it does that for a lot of people. They have these moments where they shift.
00:40:59.310 --> 00:41:03.160 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Something in their personality shifts.
00:41:03.840 --> 00:41:09.160 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And they become more of the person they were always meant to be.
00:41:10.400 --> 00:41:18.450 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Integration is key, and I'm always on my soapbox about integration, because it can…
00:41:19.040 --> 00:41:25.919 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Take the experience of a psychedelic journey and help people make sense of it.
00:41:26.160 --> 00:41:44.750 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And help them to then shed old wounds consciously, shifting perspective about, or perception about those old traumatic experiences, and then choose or decide to be
00:41:45.130 --> 00:41:49.319 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: The more expansive version of themselves moving forward.
00:41:51.200 --> 00:41:54.240 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: One of the things that I have found
00:41:54.570 --> 00:41:59.620 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: very powerful in the work that I do is
00:42:00.900 --> 00:42:06.370 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: The healing of trauma, the healing of old wounds,
00:42:07.000 --> 00:42:19.589 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Because that's what I started to realize in those early days of me being a psychotherapist, that talk therapy alone was not going to be enough.
00:42:20.510 --> 00:42:24.840 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And when I have facilitated
00:42:25.290 --> 00:42:34.370 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Psychedelic cannabis journeys, and to help people integrate psychedelic journeys.
00:42:34.660 --> 00:42:44.579 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Also, sitting for psilocybin journeys, The traumas that come up for people.
00:42:44.870 --> 00:42:49.899 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: that they… Are then able to look at
00:42:50.050 --> 00:42:53.500 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: In ways that they've never been able to.
00:42:53.790 --> 00:43:01.209 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Can you imagine someone having a childhood trauma that every time they think about it.
00:43:01.560 --> 00:43:07.510 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: They are sobbing in tears for years into their life.
00:43:08.010 --> 00:43:13.450 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And they do a journey, And then sit for integration.
00:43:13.670 --> 00:43:23.780 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And realize that they are able to take a step back from that trauma and see it from a different perspective.
00:43:24.810 --> 00:43:35.639 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And to then be able to talk about it in a way they've never been able to talk about it before, without the sobbing, without…
00:43:35.770 --> 00:43:38.030 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: the… tears.
00:43:39.110 --> 00:43:42.769 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And… To then make a decision to say.
00:43:43.280 --> 00:43:50.170 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I can see this differently now, and it will not… Control my life moving forward.
00:43:51.380 --> 00:43:57.390 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: That's the power of… Soul work. That's the power of psychedelics.
00:43:58.640 --> 00:44:02.860 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: people who… Decide to microdose.
00:44:02.990 --> 00:44:07.769 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: May not have huge, intense experiences
00:44:08.050 --> 00:44:13.180 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: As one would have with a macrodose journey.
00:44:13.560 --> 00:44:32.500 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: But the shifts and changes do happen. And I've always, when I'm working with someone who's microdosing, especially for people who are choosing to microdose because they want to shift something in their work, in the world, in their business, or have more creativity.
00:44:32.640 --> 00:44:34.270 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I always tell them.
00:44:34.650 --> 00:44:44.969 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Have your intention set every time you microdose. Because the intention that you bring to that process
00:44:45.180 --> 00:45:03.900 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: helps your energetic field bring you what it is that you want. And then as I'm working with them, usually I'm coaching someone who's microdosing, but sometimes they're also a psychotherapy client, then we bring that into our sessions.
00:45:04.180 --> 00:45:08.309 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: So that you can integrate it into your life.
00:45:08.590 --> 00:45:13.359 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: What was the aha moment that you had while you were microdosing this week?
00:45:13.470 --> 00:45:20.489 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: What was the creative idea that came up for you when you were microdosing this week?
00:45:20.910 --> 00:45:29.729 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And let's talk about it. And then how do you then apply that to your day-to-day life? How do you apply that successfully in your business?
00:45:30.020 --> 00:45:33.749 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Alright? So these are the ways in which
00:45:33.860 --> 00:45:44.820 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I help people do their soul work, because of the way I've been able to do mine over the years. This
00:45:45.160 --> 00:45:50.530 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: is the kind of work that lights me up, that I get excited about.
00:45:51.990 --> 00:45:58.839 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: We're about to take our final break, and so when we come back, We'll talk about…
00:45:59.030 --> 00:46:07.970 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: my vision for the future in reference to this kind of work in the world will look ahead, because I'm…
00:46:08.590 --> 00:46:21.679 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: seeing some shifts in the world around us, in our society, and I feel like, I sense, I gather, that we're going to have to make a shift in
00:46:21.800 --> 00:46:24.370 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: The mental health field because of it.
00:46:24.480 --> 00:46:27.060 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: So, come on back and join me.
00:48:13.550 --> 00:48:16.240 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Welcome back to the expansion room!
00:48:16.390 --> 00:48:21.400 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: So, what is the future of healing?
00:48:22.190 --> 00:48:28.379 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And that is a thought that I've been pondering probably since we came out of the pandemic.
00:48:29.940 --> 00:48:36.500 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: With my desire to be more open to the world and more expansive.
00:48:36.610 --> 00:48:43.270 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I've been giving a lot of thought to how do we move forward in
00:48:43.780 --> 00:48:52.420 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: mental health, for one. There are more and more people acknowledging that they're struggling than ever before.
00:48:53.460 --> 00:49:03.830 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And more and more people are willing to admit they've experienced trauma in their life. When we first… when I was first trained.
00:49:04.420 --> 00:49:06.460 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Trauma… that word, trauma…
00:49:06.640 --> 00:49:18.890 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: was reserved for people who had been to war, so veterans, and people who had had a traumatic experience, like…
00:49:19.070 --> 00:49:25.600 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Maybe you witnessed gun violence, or…
00:49:26.130 --> 00:49:36.160 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: had some other one-time experience, but now we realize there's this thing called chronic PTSD, where
00:49:36.360 --> 00:49:40.180 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Someone who grew up in an abusive household
00:49:40.950 --> 00:49:55.510 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: can have this diagnosis, or complex PTSD, sorry, who grew up with violence on this kind of day-to-day basis over years, or if you grew up in a violent neighborhood.
00:49:55.800 --> 00:50:01.450 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: that can leave its mark on you in a traumatic way. And so…
00:50:02.260 --> 00:50:07.550 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: It broadened the definition of trauma.
00:50:08.700 --> 00:50:14.919 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And so… With that, that means there's a lot of hurt people in the world.
00:50:15.390 --> 00:50:18.170 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Perhaps also hurting other people.
00:50:18.310 --> 00:50:23.160 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Right? And so, there's a lot of healing that needs to happen.
00:50:23.690 --> 00:50:28.619 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And more and more people are stepping into healing spaces.
00:50:29.260 --> 00:50:36.199 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: So, the role, I feel, for psychedelic therapy, when combined with
00:50:36.720 --> 00:50:43.960 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Psychotherapy and mindfulness practices is poised to be transformative.
00:50:44.200 --> 00:50:51.779 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: In both mental health care and the broadening understanding of human consciousness.
00:50:53.510 --> 00:50:58.930 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: The integrated approach presents a powerful synergy
00:51:00.530 --> 00:51:08.679 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: with each component enhancing each other, right? And so, with the role of psychedelics, it's a catalyst.
00:51:09.370 --> 00:51:11.870 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: It's a catalyst for change.
00:51:12.020 --> 00:51:15.610 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: It doesn't seem to matter which medicine you choose.
00:51:15.830 --> 00:51:25.350 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: But it's a catalyst for change, and a window that opens for neuroplasticity, which we've talked about on this show, right? Where…
00:51:26.330 --> 00:51:29.090 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: You remain more flexible.
00:51:29.510 --> 00:51:30.700 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: than rigid.
00:51:32.760 --> 00:51:38.480 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: There is a rapid and profound breakthrough that happens
00:51:38.810 --> 00:51:42.869 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: For many people who step in the psychedelic space.
00:51:43.870 --> 00:51:56.429 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Where, like, your default mode network is just brought down just a little bit so that you can let go or release rigid thought patterns.
00:51:57.470 --> 00:52:01.779 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: There's a lot of emotional processing that happens in that space.
00:52:02.120 --> 00:52:06.669 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And the enhanced brain flexibility
00:52:08.120 --> 00:52:19.719 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: expands, right? You don't just have it in the psychedelic space, but it could expand a little further into your life. Like, for me, where I…
00:52:20.130 --> 00:52:26.839 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: may still be an introvert, but I don't always feel as introverted as I used to.
00:52:28.040 --> 00:52:34.589 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: The role of psychotherapy here… In this container.
00:52:35.060 --> 00:52:38.239 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: is still to be the container.
00:52:40.950 --> 00:52:45.059 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: It's, like, the essential framework that…
00:52:46.620 --> 00:52:53.079 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Psychedelics and psychedelic integration can be housed in, or held in.
00:52:53.220 --> 00:52:58.109 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: It's the space for integrating the psychedelic experience.
00:52:58.350 --> 00:53:02.940 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: It's the space for preparation and intention setting.
00:53:03.100 --> 00:53:07.930 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Right? It's the space for setting, right?
00:53:09.430 --> 00:53:14.699 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Guidance through the session, as well as the integration that follows.
00:53:15.070 --> 00:53:19.730 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And in this context, the role of mindfulness
00:53:20.230 --> 00:53:27.099 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: is the sustaining vehicle. It's almost like the glue that runs between the two.
00:53:28.400 --> 00:53:31.310 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: It helps you to build skills.
00:53:31.790 --> 00:53:42.470 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Like meditation, and breathwork, and other mindfulness practices that help you to have present-centered awareness.
00:53:43.860 --> 00:53:48.610 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: It is the sustainer of the neuroplasticity
00:53:48.780 --> 00:53:54.090 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And it helps prevent relapse. So, oftentimes.
00:53:54.600 --> 00:54:07.309 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: People have big breakthroughs in psychedelic experiences, and then they do integration, and it's the mindfulness practice that helps them to remember long-term.
00:54:07.480 --> 00:54:21.469 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: what it was that they gained out of that experience. And so, it is the sustainer. And so that's why I think of mindfulness practices as the glue that runs between.
00:54:24.340 --> 00:54:28.010 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: So, the future impact on humanity…
00:54:28.280 --> 00:54:38.359 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: for these three modalities. It's revolutionizing mental health, Shifting the paradigm of healing
00:54:38.940 --> 00:54:48.879 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And enhancing the collective consciousness and empathy, which we seem to be lacking in this world right now.
00:54:50.240 --> 00:54:54.159 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And it will deepen personal growth.
00:54:54.520 --> 00:54:58.190 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: So, in the work that I do now, I have…
00:54:58.800 --> 00:55:10.420 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: merged those three modalities. I offer psychotherapy, which I call mental wellness and mindset shifting.
00:55:11.080 --> 00:55:23.489 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I bring in yoga therapy, which is really about mindfulness practices and medicine work, right?
00:55:23.490 --> 00:55:38.599 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: medicine work, including microdosing. So, I created, a year or so ago, this program called the 3M Model, where I can bring those three things together in the work that I do with people.
00:55:38.890 --> 00:55:44.219 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Who are looking to heal, and… expand.
00:55:44.650 --> 00:55:54.100 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And to be able to bring something into the world, maybe through their work, through their business, that can then help other people.
00:55:54.730 --> 00:56:02.370 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And so… I know for a fact healing is not linear, And
00:56:02.650 --> 00:56:16.490 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: It is a process. But I think these three modalities together can give people the tools that they need in order to become the creator
00:56:16.830 --> 00:56:18.580 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: of their life.
00:56:18.700 --> 00:56:25.269 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: that they were always meant to be. And so that is the work that I do now.
00:56:25.480 --> 00:56:34.619 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And this is the journey that I've shared with you today that I've been on for all these years that has led me to this moment.
00:56:35.510 --> 00:56:37.559 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I wouldn't change a thing.
00:56:38.280 --> 00:56:40.480 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I'm glad to be here.
00:56:40.880 --> 00:56:48.480 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: doing the work I'm doing now in this world that is shifting and changing right before our eyes.
00:56:50.240 --> 00:57:00.250 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: So… If anything that you've heard today resonates with you, I'd…
00:57:00.430 --> 00:57:06.349 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I'd ask you to really think about… What are the threads?
00:57:06.660 --> 00:57:13.679 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: That run through your life, That are just waiting to be woven together.
00:57:19.330 --> 00:57:24.019 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I hope that… This has been helpful for you.
00:57:24.220 --> 00:57:30.649 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And that, if you have found something helpful for you, that you will pass it on to a friend.
00:57:31.150 --> 00:57:33.070 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: That you think could benefit.
00:57:33.560 --> 00:57:42.619 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And I would ask you also to like and subscribe on whichever platform that you're listening or watching me on.
00:57:43.190 --> 00:57:45.709 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: And come back next time.
00:57:46.300 --> 00:57:54.869 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Where we will continue to have purpose-driven conversations that are about healing and growth.
00:57:56.060 --> 00:57:57.780 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: Take care of yourself.
00:57:59.370 --> 00:58:00.800 Shervon Laurice | The Expansion Room: I'll see you next week.
