[PREMIERE] The Walls Between Us

Thursdays 11:00am - 12:00pm (EDT)

EPISODE SUMMARY:

Listeners will open up to new ways of understanding and healing the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

"The Wall Between is a book about the wall that exists between Jewish and Palestinian communities in the Diaspora. Distrust, enmity, and hate are common currencies. They manifest at university campuses, schools and school boards, at political events, onsocial media, and in academic circles. For Jews, Israel must exist; for Palestinians, the historic injustice being committed since 1948 must be reversed. Neither wants to know why the Other cannot budge on these issues. The wall is up."Join Rev. Dr. TLC and her guests, Raja Khouri and Jeffrey Wilkinson, authors of "The Walls Between Us: What Jews and Palestinians Don't Want to Know About Each Other" as they discuss justice and "new possibilities within the Israel-Palestine discourse in the West."

Show Notes

Segment 1

Rev. Dr. TLC encourages her listeners to grab a copy of her book Dismantling Racism. She starts off her show with a guided meditation as a way to ground us for today’s discussion. Rev. Dr. TLC gives a breakdown of what she thinks today’s title, The Wall Between Us, means to her. She encourages her listeners to read the book if they are looking for a guide for healing. This book can help you open up to new possibilities within the israel-palestine discourse in the west. Rev. Dr. TLC introduces her guests and author of The Wall Between Us, Raja Khouri and Jeffrey Wilkinson. Before the break, Jeffrey and Raja share how they started working together and how they had to find common ground to make it work.

Segment 2

Rev. Dr. TLC asks her guest to talk about the meta narratives that we hear about Jewish people and Palestinian. Raja talks about the history of anti-Semitism and the Holocaust. He also talks about the victimhood of the Palestinians and how it started in the late 1940s. Jeffrey defines the difference between victimhood and victimization. Raja and Jeffrey discuss a character from their book, Maurice de Hirsch. Jeffrey talks about how their challenge was to discuss power and loss of power at the same time.

Segment 3

Rev. Dr. TLC asks Jeffrey how he gets his community to engage in the conversation of race. Jeffrey talks about trauma and how we can all benefit from understanding each other's suffering. Communication starts when we can humanize each other and look past our differences. Jeffrey talks about trauma and explains that it isn’t the event that is keeping you from healing it’s the memory or story that stays with us. Jeffrey says his inclusion of Raja’s story makes his story richer.

Segment 4

Jeffrey and Raja read a section from their book The Wall Between Us. Jeffrey’s  overview of the book helps to prepare the listeners for the brief reading.
