[NEW EPISODE] Meet Greatness Halfway

The audience will gain insight into how they can break the barriers standing in their path to fulfillment and how the path to personal greatness aligns with our collective path to an equitable world.

We all enter the world with abundant power to achieve greatness, in whatever package may be meant for us. Greatness seeks us, but it's up to us to forge a path so we can meet it halfway. That path is bound to have some obstacles, but we are fully capable of breaking them down and navigating toward our fullest potential.⁣⁣

⁣⁣Rev. Dr. TLC and her guest, Frances Pitt, will unpack the behaviors that create barriers between us and true happiness and fulfillment. Join us as we discuss the ways these barriers show up in systems of oppression and how dismantling these systems aligns with breaking down the barriers in our individual paths.

Show Notes

Segment 1

Rev Dr. TLC takes a moment to invite her listeners to meditate. She informs her audience about what Juneteenth stands for. A day to celebrate the freedom of black people. In 2020 congress passed the Juneteenth National independence day. Rev. Dr. TLC asks her audience to think about the meaning of the day when they are celebrating Juneteenth. When you celebrate Juneteenth, you are becoming aware of systematic racism. She says we often see celebrating black people as means to make money when it should be used as a way to break racist cycles. Rev. Dr. TLC asks her audience what they will do differently when they celebrate Juneteenth? When you don’t reflect and do the research when celebrating, you begin to make a mockery of the holiday. Before the break, Rev Dr. TLC introduces the topics for today’s episode. She also introduces her guest Frances Pitt and tells her listeners about her background and credentials.

Segment 2

Rev. Dr. TLC welcomes Frances to the show. She asks Frances to talk about the idea that we are all born with attributes that lead to greatness. Frances says that yes, we are all born with a gift, but it is to the degree that we use the gift that will reflect in our life. She states some examples of common attributes found within us. She lists willpower, strength, understanding, faith, love, and other tools used in our everyday life. These tools connect us to our relationships, careers, and even how we see ourselves. Rev. Dr. TLC and Frances discuss the importance of how we use these tools in our lives, which will reflect on us as people. France states there are five steps in discovering the tools. It starts with our thoughts, which lead to our words, carried by our actions, followed by our reactions, and ends with our feelings. These are tools we can use to help meet our goals. Frances says we can’t control our thoughts, but we can control what we react to. Before the break, Rev. Dr. TLC and Frances discuss meditation and its benefits.

Segment 3

France talks about what it was like growing up in the south on a tobacco and cotton farm. She talks about the abundance of land that her ancestors purchased. She states that the Pitt farm has been in the family since 1868, just three years after the abolishment of slavery. Frances continues to share her family history with Rev. Dr. TLC. She gives us insight into what life was like for her parents and grandparents. She reflects on family stories and compares them to the times of today. Frances says knowing your history and where you come from is significant in your journey.

Segment 4

Frances shares a time she worked at an insurance company as an insurance planner. In her region there were 79 white male, a jewish woman, and herself. She talks about a man who went out of his way to support Frances. He went on to be her mentor and coach. She mentions how he made an effort to connect his community with hers by coming to Frances church. When people stand up and put action into words is when you can finally dismantle racism. Rev. Dr. TLC says black people have barriers but there are ways we can flourish in the midst of racism.

00:03:43.020 --> 00:03:47.520 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: We are in the throes of celebrating juneteenth.

00:03:48.960 --> 00:03:50.400 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: And what is juneteenth.

00:03:51.420 --> 00:04:10.410 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: juneteenth is about the fact that the emancipation proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1 1863 but the news did not reach the Union army and enslaved people in galveston Texas until 1865.

00:04:11.460 --> 00:04:21.480 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Two years later, so free black men and women, with the assistance from the Texas freedmen's bureau establish Freedom Day.

00:04:22.050 --> 00:04:37.710 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Jubilee day and it's now known as juneteenth why because it's from the month of June and it took place on the 19th of June in 1866 to celebrate the freedom of black people.

00:04:39.060 --> 00:04:39.540 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: In.

00:04:40.650 --> 00:04:59.370 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: June of 2020 just two days before June 10 was to occur, President by signed in into Congress World Congress passed, let me be articulate here Congress passed the June team national Independence Day.

00:05:00.300 --> 00:05:11.460 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: and President Biden signed it, two days before June T but here's The thing that I want to invite you to consider while you're celebrating June team.

00:05:12.600 --> 00:05:15.630 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: What is juneteenth really about.

00:05:16.890 --> 00:05:27.450 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: For me, to celebrate juneteenth is to become aware to gain knowledge about the things that bound us and that keep us in a state of racial inequities.

00:05:28.320 --> 00:05:37.440 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: to celebrate juneteenth is to become aware of the ways systemic racism permeate society and once we are aware.

00:05:38.220 --> 00:05:43.740 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: To do something about the destructive practices, the self that separate us.

00:05:44.190 --> 00:05:51.990 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: to celebrate juneteenth is to become aware of why there is mass incarceration for black and brown people.

00:05:52.290 --> 00:06:00.870 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Why the laws around drug usage, distribution and treatment for that matter, are different for black and brown communities.

00:06:01.260 --> 00:06:10.710 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: to become aware of why the rules are different for Ukrainian refugees than it is for brown immigrants fleeing their country.

00:06:11.460 --> 00:06:23.250 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: of drug cartels, who declare war on their citizens to become aware with me, we look at why there are significant health medical financial.

00:06:24.030 --> 00:06:40.470 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: and educational disparities among black and brown people to become aware with me to really look at your company and other companies and organizations and to ask why are there more white people in positions of power and not black and brown folks.

00:06:41.850 --> 00:06:53.970 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: to become aware would mean that we would have to uncover what parts of our systems, keep us all locked and bound in a system of racism.

00:06:55.080 --> 00:06:57.450 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: And then, once we are aware.

00:06:58.560 --> 00:06:59.910 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: We move into action.

00:07:01.680 --> 00:07:03.270 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: In order to bring about freedom.

00:07:04.860 --> 00:07:17.850 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Freedom that exists for everyone and not just for some folks freedom that says racial equity is the norm and disparities are none existence.

00:07:18.780 --> 00:07:36.810 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: So juneteenth should be about more than just a celebration of the experience of black people, yes, I want to celebrate black people and black culture, because it's worthy of celebration, but all too often we see it.

00:07:38.280 --> 00:07:54.510 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: As an opportunity to make money as an opportunity to feast off of someone else's oppression, it should be more than about slapping a juneteenth flag on ice cream.

00:07:55.050 --> 00:08:02.730 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: or doing a social media post to say that you're celebrating black culture, because to celebrate is to want my freedom.

00:08:03.390 --> 00:08:10.980 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: to celebrate is to want for me the privileges that exist for some folks white folks in particular.

00:08:11.940 --> 00:08:27.720 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: And so I want you when you're celebrating jonesy and when you're celebrating the best of who I am I want you to think about how will you become more aware of the things that separate us.

00:08:28.920 --> 00:08:34.290 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: What will you do differently as you're going out and you're honoring this day.

00:08:35.370 --> 00:08:40.560 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: I applaud you for trying to learn more about the black culture.

00:08:41.700 --> 00:08:56.910 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: I applaud those people who, for instance, on Sunday will celebrate in their church June team who will do something to talk about what juneteenth means, but I want it to be more than performative for you.

00:08:57.510 --> 00:09:15.090 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: I want you when you're celebrating in your companies to find out those things that keep your black and brown employees in bondage to think about what their day to day life is about to think about how they can feel free in your company.

00:09:16.560 --> 00:09:28.500 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: To think about how racism impacts you, because if you can't do that you're not really celebrating juneteenth you're making a mockery of what juneteenth means.

00:09:30.960 --> 00:09:36.330 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: So think clearly about the ways in which you can become more aware.

00:09:37.500 --> 00:09:39.210 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: about what takes place.

00:09:40.500 --> 00:09:46.770 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: In your home in your community in your organization in your church.

00:09:48.240 --> 00:09:53.610 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Think about what you're doing when you say that you want to celebrate June thing.

00:09:55.740 --> 00:09:56.730 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Because become aware.

00:09:57.750 --> 00:10:01.980 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: And then move into action to end systemic racism.

00:10:03.030 --> 00:10:06.210 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: So I invite you, as you celebrate juneteenth.

00:10:07.560 --> 00:10:13.140 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: I want you to think about how you can dig deeper and ask yourself this question.

00:10:14.310 --> 00:10:21.810 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: What do I need to know that I don't already know that will help me to dismantle racism.

00:10:23.100 --> 00:10:30.900 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Then, and only then can you celebrate the freedom of black people in this country.

00:10:34.920 --> 00:10:42.570 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Today, on our show we're going to be talking about how do we meet greatness halfway.

00:10:45.030 --> 00:10:50.070 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: We all enter the world with an abundance of power to achieve greatness.

00:10:51.840 --> 00:11:02.340 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: It may be packaged differently, for each of us, because we come with a unique gift we're all gifted with something special about us.

00:11:03.480 --> 00:11:15.510 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: greatness is always seeking us but it's a matter of whether we want to meet greatness halfway, do we want to put up blockers so that we don't live to our fullest potential.

00:11:17.790 --> 00:11:30.420 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: The path will have some obstacles to it, but we are fully capable of breaking down and navigating any barriers that exist in order.

00:11:31.080 --> 00:11:47.310 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: To get to our fullest potential so i'm delighted today that my guests, Francis pit will help us to unpack the behaviors that create those barriers and will help us to begin to look at what is it that we're born with.

00:11:48.720 --> 00:11:55.620 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: What are those gifts and those principles that we can carry forward that will help us.

00:11:57.120 --> 00:12:08.610 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: to live out our greatness, because when we live out our greatness remember I said, our secret intelligence is about making choices that will help us to manifest our greatness.

00:12:09.510 --> 00:12:24.240 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: It will also help us to manifest the greatness and others or for them to manifest their own greatness, and if we are manifesting greatness all around racism cannot exist.

00:12:25.320 --> 00:12:36.840 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: So these principles can be put into place in order for us to dismantle racism you're listening to the show today because that's what you want to do.

00:12:37.380 --> 00:12:52.890 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: And so, Francis will help us and will guide us through the principles that she uses to work towards greatness and we're going to apply those principles to dismantling racism so who was Francis pick.

00:16:01.800 --> 00:16:07.440 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: You know this, this idea that we're all born with these attributes.

00:16:07.980 --> 00:16:10.530 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: yeah a lead to great.

00:16:11.610 --> 00:16:12.120 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: So.

00:16:12.390 --> 00:16:13.260 tell us a little bit.

00:16:15.210 --> 00:16:20.070 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: But you right, and thank you so much for the opportunity to be here today.

00:16:21.150 --> 00:16:21.810 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Now.

00:16:22.890 --> 00:16:35.040 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: These attributes I use them in seminars, that I produce and we say that everybody comes to the earth with these attributes of God.

00:16:35.940 --> 00:16:58.800 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: of higher power creative intelligence, whatever name you choose to say, but we come on this earth with them and to the degree that we are aware that they are found within is and to the degree that we use them is to the to the degree that it will show up in our lives.

00:16:59.130 --> 00:17:07.890 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: In our careers enough friendships relationships income everything we touch So is there.

00:17:09.510 --> 00:17:19.680 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: A good example of what we were saying those attributes are and we see it all the time, one would be your willpower your strength.

00:17:20.790 --> 00:17:23.850 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Understanding your faith.

00:17:24.960 --> 00:17:34.650 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Your love your joy and those type things that really can be used as a tool in your career to really make life work.

00:17:34.950 --> 00:17:39.450 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: So they are there, but to the degree that we discover them.

00:17:40.470 --> 00:17:47.670 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: reflect on them and use them is actually what will show up in our lives as we speak today.

00:17:48.270 --> 00:17:59.130 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: So I love this great because, from what you're saying is we're all born with it, that that these attributes of God per se are in all of us is that what i'm understanding you to say.

00:17:59.460 --> 00:18:01.170 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Yes, I am okay.

00:18:01.470 --> 00:18:12.240 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: So here's what I love about this because, as a pastor I get this question all the time when I say to people, I believe that God has manifested in all of us.

00:18:12.660 --> 00:18:23.520 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: And that, when we look at one another that we're looking at the manifestation of God and so often my parishioners and those people that that I teach will sometimes say I don't.

00:18:23.940 --> 00:18:25.320 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: I don't understand that pastor.

00:18:25.470 --> 00:18:33.210 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: I do not understand that when I look at X, Y and Z I do not see God in them, and I say to them God is there.

00:18:34.800 --> 00:18:55.620 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: A garden it they don't recognize it somewhere they're not seeing the god in them, and if they do they're using it in a way that's not God like, and so I love what you just said, to the extent that they are aware of it, and to the extent that they use it.

00:18:56.820 --> 00:18:57.390 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Correct.

00:18:57.840 --> 00:18:59.880 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Right powerful powerful.

00:19:00.450 --> 00:19:10.050 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And, and when we look there's a note that I always like to say who we have become can be traced back to our thoughts.

00:19:11.010 --> 00:19:27.450 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: The thoughts that we hold, as we believe was possible for us and our careers and activities and families, so when I talk about you have these gifts, how do you use them is the first thing I want to say.

00:19:28.770 --> 00:19:47.520 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And then there's five steps that I like to say they show up in our thoughts what thoughts, do you carry around what do you hold on to what thoughts, do you contemplate about the thoughts, because we know thoughts do become thing correct.

00:19:47.730 --> 00:19:53.820 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Right right that's one principle we can observe how we use those tools that God gave us.

00:19:56.160 --> 00:19:59.010 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Step number two words.

00:20:00.180 --> 00:20:18.720 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: What words do we consistently use in our conversations, because what you consistently speak, you will create and you will receive it so words uplifting empowerment of words that are not empowering number two.

00:20:20.040 --> 00:20:23.400 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Number three we look at actions.

00:20:24.720 --> 00:20:35.160 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: right actions we call them one of the actions that we're doing daily to change the world to change our lives or to change people that are coming in contact with.

00:20:35.910 --> 00:20:48.870 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: What our actions daily Are we moving toward a goal or standing still I heard a speaker say just yesterday that 90% of our thoughts, we have them the year before.

00:20:49.800 --> 00:21:00.450 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: So how much are we changing each year going in going out and just manifesting or recreating the same thing over and over.

00:21:00.990 --> 00:21:17.100 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: I love that thought, because I never thought about it that way, and then number four as a tool will be your reactions to life, who you really are will show up in terms of how do you deal with failure.

00:21:18.120 --> 00:21:27.150 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: A seeming fill your I like to say, because there are no such thing as failure it's just a step along the way to get you to where you going.

00:21:27.540 --> 00:21:47.250 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: But reactions, so we need right reactions, we need actions right action and, most importantly, to me, of the five would be right feelings, you know you don't have to speak, a person can basically look at you, it form an opinion about how you feeling at that moment right.

00:21:47.490 --> 00:21:50.040 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Right and energetically, we can feel that right.

00:21:50.130 --> 00:22:09.420 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: that's right and then also right feeling there's a feeling that you carry around in your daily activities like i'm on cause i'm doing what I need to be doing i'm happy i'm asking for help i'm just out there, but i'm always moving toward my goal.

00:22:09.960 --> 00:22:10.860 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: So we call them.

00:22:11.130 --> 00:22:22.140 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: right words right thought right actions right reactions and right feeling to to help us accomplish our goals here on earth.

00:22:22.770 --> 00:22:30.060 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: You know, when you were talking you talk about all of these these these five principles, one of the things I thought about was.

00:22:30.780 --> 00:22:44.280 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Then, how do we get people to uncover these things, and for me as a as a cognitive behavioral psychologist great one of the things I often talk about is monitoring our thoughts feelings.

00:22:44.970 --> 00:23:03.510 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: And reactions in fact in my most recent book, I talked about monitoring our mindset, we have to know what it is that we think we know what it is that we built So what are some ways in which you help people to uncover their thoughts their feelings or your actions and.

00:23:03.750 --> 00:23:11.940 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: The reason you know what stands out most for me is basically the process to meditation.

00:23:12.330 --> 00:23:13.800 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: That is a tool.

00:23:14.220 --> 00:23:24.690 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: that one can use to uncover because, as you are sitting in your quietness, you have the opportunity to watch those thoughts flow by.

00:23:25.050 --> 00:23:27.600 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Which which are the thoughts for your life.

00:23:28.380 --> 00:23:31.410 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: So who's sitting in the theater watching those thoughts.

00:23:32.610 --> 00:23:44.010 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: who's managing those thoughts so in a time of quietness you get a chance to watch them and work on the ones that you want to improve upon.

00:23:44.970 --> 00:23:49.200 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Some research say we have from 60 to 75,000.

00:23:49.470 --> 00:24:02.130 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: thoughts daily that flirt in and out of our life you can't control that you can't stop that, however, you can control the ones that you spend your time on.

00:24:02.610 --> 00:24:03.990 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: The one that you react.

00:24:03.990 --> 00:24:06.060 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: To the ones that you want to.

00:24:06.060 --> 00:24:13.470 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Change the one that you want to modify to create the things that you want, in your life.

00:24:14.010 --> 00:24:29.640 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Oh, so you just said a lot there so so so one thing you said was around the meditation and then the other thing is, you said that we have the power to change, so I want to address how do we change our thoughts, but, but before I do that.

00:24:31.170 --> 00:24:46.200 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: talk to us about the meditation practice because you say to sit in meditation so should the meditation be a daily routine that we practice, you know how often should people engage in that.

00:24:46.770 --> 00:25:05.010 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: I would say, as often as needed but a daily process is excellent consistency, it can be as short or as long as you choose some people do 15 minutes some do 30 some doing our some do it twice a day.

00:25:05.580 --> 00:25:17.490 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Or, I always say whenever an issue comes up I need to handle I go into quiet and is to see how to come through that particular process, but for sure.

00:25:18.600 --> 00:25:29.760 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: The consistency, the discipline of doing it two or three times a once a day will automatically automatically clear out some of the fog in your mind.

00:25:30.570 --> 00:25:38.580 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: It gives you clarity, it gives you like the soul of the heart of the person peace comes as a results.

00:25:39.090 --> 00:25:49.380 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And you just tend to relax the body most most of the time we don't even know we have tense, we can be sitting and i'll shows up and we don't know it.

00:25:49.860 --> 00:26:10.830 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: But if someone in meditation said drop your shoulders, you can feel it going down, and you can feel the body, you know relaxing and for sure I have learned through meditation the moment you relax is the moment that answers and clarity can come to you and, through you.

00:26:11.340 --> 00:26:30.060 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Yes, but if you're like my fists are folded here, nothing can get in and nothing can come out so we not helping ourselves, but the body is relaxed when the body is relax I believe things can happen through us for us as.

00:26:30.870 --> 00:26:32.940 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And that's my personal belief.

00:26:33.660 --> 00:26:46.110 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: I love that of what you're saying, though, because it's really about an awareness, just as I said at the beginning of the show, so that when you're in meditation you become more mindful.

00:26:46.920 --> 00:26:58.230 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Right healings how the body is feeling and mindful of your thoughts and what I appreciate about meditation and what you just said is allowing the thoughts to float by because.

00:26:58.620 --> 00:27:04.380 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Because we have thoughts from years ago that probably thoughts from past lives that.

00:27:05.880 --> 00:27:23.190 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: as well, but what you're saying is become aware become aware of what's happening and then that might lead to to the change right, so you said you have the power to change our thoughts.

00:27:23.550 --> 00:27:25.950 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Right tell us more about that.

00:27:26.580 --> 00:27:41.070 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Okay, so what I basically do is what we call affirmations or declarations, like in my program some of the things that we actually do is daily declarations.

00:27:42.060 --> 00:28:04.380 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: You know, like I am worthy I am enough, I am gifted I have the answer I can handle this you know, and if you say those things over and over so many times a day, the body responds and then mind response and you actually start to feel that, and you believe it.

00:28:05.610 --> 00:28:09.930 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And then other things we do it with declarations and.

00:28:11.040 --> 00:28:15.210 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: affirmation is you're seeing it as if it already.

00:28:16.560 --> 00:28:27.030 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: You are claiming it before it happens and you're walking in the energy of as it as if it already is, and I think that's so important.

00:28:27.510 --> 00:28:35.100 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Because you know you can put your mind on a and there may be an issue, but you can okay switch that mind to be.

00:28:35.520 --> 00:28:47.430 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: and see something else see what you want, see how to produce this he had to create it but it's always about choice, am I concentrated on a the problem or am I choosing be.

00:28:47.880 --> 00:29:02.790 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: To look at options are various ways to handle it do not get caught up in the problem or the seeming problem switch those thoughts, just like we switch the stations on a TV or radio.

00:29:03.300 --> 00:29:13.410 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: You fine tune it you get what you're looking for, as you turn that radio nah when you when you get to the music that you like you know you there.

00:29:14.160 --> 00:29:16.260 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And there's how you concentrate.

00:29:16.590 --> 00:29:24.450 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: switch from the problem go to a situation that you can control to get the mind and the body all aligned.

00:29:25.080 --> 00:29:38.610 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: to receive the assistance that you're asking for you get always ask for help that can be from individuals that we bump into our people that are part of our team, they can always help.

00:29:39.510 --> 00:29:49.800 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: And you know what I love about this idea around the part of a team is because the team begins when you sit in that meditation and understand that.

00:29:49.920 --> 00:30:01.890 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: The heart of that team is your divine wisdom, because a lot comes forward in that meditation even as you're letting your mind clear, all of a sudden, you can have an Epiphany about something.

00:30:02.250 --> 00:30:09.630 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Okay, I want to talk with you a little bit more around these principles and and switching.

00:30:10.110 --> 00:30:25.140 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: to another channel so different music switch into the solution because I want to talk about how your principles actually apply to the ways in which you've lived your life and also about how we can use it to dismantle racism, but we.

00:30:25.290 --> 00:30:26.190 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: take quick break.

00:30:26.640 --> 00:30:27.120 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And then.

00:32:41.280 --> 00:32:43.200 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Racism, I show my guest today is.

00:32:43.200 --> 00:33:03.600 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Francis Pitt and we have been talking about the idea that all of us are born with what it takes to become great in life, but some of us are aware of what it takes and we're aware of these attributes and some of us choose to use them, are aware and some of.

00:33:03.600 --> 00:33:16.530 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: us choose not to but Francis I want to talk a bit, you know as you were talking about these attributes and then you gave the five principles that you use in your life around our thoughts and.

00:33:17.130 --> 00:33:33.270 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: feelings and our reactions and the right reactions, yes contact me a little bit about your upbringing, because I know that you grew up on your your parents, tobacco and cotton farm in the south.

00:33:33.930 --> 00:33:35.850 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: And I wanted to start by saying.

00:33:37.230 --> 00:33:49.950 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: That was huge for a black person to have a tobacco and cotton farm you know back in the day, because we know that a lot of people did not own.

00:33:50.310 --> 00:33:58.260 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: their own land, a lot of black folks did not own their own land, and so I think it's really important that we point out that you all work.

00:33:58.740 --> 00:34:14.550 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: land owners, because I think that, while you have these principles in place, they were already being shaped and formed, probably by your parents and your ancestors, in order for you to be even in that position.

00:34:15.630 --> 00:34:15.990 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Oh.

00:34:16.050 --> 00:34:31.800 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Your family owns because he I think we have to go back to our ancestors, and you and I had the conversation like my family was like we were landowners and I took it for granted, because most people in my Community black people were land owners.

00:34:32.160 --> 00:34:35.310 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: I didn't realize until I got to be an adult like wait a minute.

00:34:35.880 --> 00:34:48.360 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: This is unusual so talk to me a bit about your experience of of growing up, and your family being land owners and how you've used it.

00:34:49.470 --> 00:34:55.110 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: To move forward so Greg here now speaking at conferences, such as like in London England.

00:34:56.940 --> 00:35:08.700 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Oh, I would love to share that um my family, the pig farm has been in our that farm has been in our family since 1868.

00:35:10.200 --> 00:35:13.890 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: So we're talking, three years after slavery, has been abolished.

00:35:15.180 --> 00:35:41.220 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: So that gives us pride and then we had ancestors that continued to purchase land as time went on 1868 was a purchase then another farm was purchased I think in 24 another one in 34 and 40 something, but it ended up being quite a number of acreage a purchase I should say.

00:35:42.270 --> 00:35:56.700 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And, and I know, over the years, my family ancestors they had to have they have fought to keep it in the family, because so many people have lost their land due to taxes and other things that could take it away.

00:35:58.020 --> 00:36:09.390 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: But I remember one of my favorite aunt who passed on, not only did my grandfather buy land, but he gave land to his each child and she was on a.

00:36:10.440 --> 00:36:20.400 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: area we're in a little town, but it was a popular area, a lot of traffic and whatnot he said every Friday some white person was calling there.

00:36:21.060 --> 00:36:32.100 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Do you want a sale, when do you want to sale, how much can I offer so it was always people trying to get it, and I remember barely my father saying.

00:36:32.760 --> 00:36:44.160 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: That someone asked him about purchasing the land and he's on the second farm and said man said to him, I would like eddie, I would like to purchase sheila and I want this for my grandson.

00:36:45.300 --> 00:36:48.900 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And my father use a profanity yes.

00:36:54.480 --> 00:36:55.860 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Exactly.

00:36:56.250 --> 00:37:06.210 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: amazing you know the things that we have learned the stories, I have a sister who's at who gives us a lot of history and stories about when on.

00:37:06.750 --> 00:37:27.600 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And the last story is a you know high in the country, we have all these little enable store corner stores and my sisters and my father was in this store corner store and the owner said to him well you know eddie I just got married so now, you have to call me, Mr elmo.

00:37:28.800 --> 00:37:34.260 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: it's funny when I hear so my father said, well, are you going to call me, Mr eddie.

00:37:35.580 --> 00:37:40.740 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And the man said hey no and my dad is aware hell no i'm not call you.

00:37:40.860 --> 00:37:41.400 Mr.

00:37:42.450 --> 00:37:49.200 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And they say my father never return to that store but it just kind of gives you the flavor of how life was in the day.

00:37:50.970 --> 00:37:53.400 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: And I think it gives us the flavor but it.

00:37:53.460 --> 00:37:56.460 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: also gives us a bonus.

00:37:56.820 --> 00:38:00.060 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: of our ancestors to say no, I want some.

00:38:00.210 --> 00:38:03.600 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: The same thing you want, for your people.

00:38:03.870 --> 00:38:12.810 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: were right, I want for me and i'm going to stand up and say no i'm not calling you, Mr and I, and I think that that's important.

00:38:13.710 --> 00:38:23.460 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Role of dismantling racism it's important that we stand up it's important to us, but when we get now look I understand.

00:38:24.270 --> 00:38:29.520 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: That your father even owning the land and standing up came with a danger.

00:38:29.970 --> 00:38:37.620 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: But I think that that's also something that people have to understand as well we get to choose what we're going to sacrifice and what we're willing.

00:38:37.860 --> 00:38:48.630 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: To fight for and then, when he was fighting for his dignity and fighting for his land, and I think that that is important, I also want to just point out.

00:38:49.260 --> 00:38:58.170 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: The ways in which we have been kept bound is because all too often white people have gotten our land white people have.

00:38:58.740 --> 00:39:10.380 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: said here i'm going to offer you this amount of money and they didn't have money in our face, so I appreciate it, but I want you to continue with what you're saying about how you've used your principles.

00:39:10.440 --> 00:39:16.080 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: as well, and I think it started with our ancestors as well, for example.

00:39:17.700 --> 00:39:25.170 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: We all worked on the farm until we were 18, but it was expected that everybody in that household would go to college.

00:39:26.520 --> 00:39:40.650 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: My parents, it was 10 of them my father and nine siblings so five went to college and five did not my father was what we call a diversity farmer, he was just very good at that.

00:39:41.400 --> 00:39:57.840 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: So consider 1868 whatever crops, they grew up that time when I came along, it was like cotton, tobacco peanuts soybeans corn strawberry cucumbers and I was kind of.

00:39:58.620 --> 00:40:05.880 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: The one closest to the end, the younger one, so I didn't do that much and everybody knew I didn't do that much because I didn't want to.

00:40:07.470 --> 00:40:16.500 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: So, but we had that tobacco and cotton and things like that up until it was no longer profitable to do tobacco.

00:40:17.730 --> 00:40:32.310 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And we switched over I think like in 2008 to growing prawns PR aws is another name for fresh water shrimps and we have been embarking on that type of.

00:40:34.410 --> 00:40:46.680 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: How should I say, learning a new way to survive on a farm, you have to change, just like everybody else does and that's a big one, with us right now also prawns and also.

00:40:47.520 --> 00:40:51.480 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Growing your own vegetables and the high tunnels and things like that.

00:40:52.260 --> 00:41:03.480 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: So, so my family was proud people they own their land and they taught in value education so that was passed down from generation to generation.

00:41:04.200 --> 00:41:21.510 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And and that's where I get my belief in knowing your history is so important and knowing what you bring to the world and knowing that life can be exactly like you want, if you're willing to pay the price.

00:41:21.600 --> 00:41:35.250 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: hmm now for me, I attended in a historical black university work for the dean of women, I think, for at least maybe two three years and.

00:41:36.600 --> 00:41:45.840 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: thought she had fired me because, on a Monday morning no students were there, I was running the last statistic, so I leave my hair down to get a rest.

00:41:46.110 --> 00:41:48.060 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: and obviously I fell asleep.

00:41:48.600 --> 00:41:58.470 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And she walked in and clock me, and this was a no nonsense deep so she walked out she just said to me, did we not hire you to run this lab.

00:41:59.100 --> 00:41:59.910 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And I said.

00:42:00.000 --> 00:42:06.720 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Yes, ma'am and I said, but you can see, there are no students here, and she said how would you know you're sleeping.

00:42:54.150 --> 00:42:55.860 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And then I stepped into that.

00:42:55.860 --> 00:43:07.500 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Space right and I gotta beat it I gotta leave it I got to be prepared, I gotta do what's required of me, but those are unseen things that we could not have seen in your younger years.

00:43:08.460 --> 00:43:22.560 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: I have a goal to be something great the universe provides a person like the data sociology a favorite history teacher someone who coaches you and encourage you to be a better self.

00:43:22.950 --> 00:43:27.450 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: So that's what I mean when you seeking something is also seeking you, but you have.

00:43:27.720 --> 00:43:28.980 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: To do your part.

00:43:29.340 --> 00:43:44.430 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: I love that and it goes back to your principles that you were talking about your thoughts your behaviors and you know you're right reactions, because you could have said i'm not filling this out i'm not doing this i'm not doing that, but.

00:43:44.670 --> 00:43:51.750 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Because of your ancestors their history, you know you you honored what she said right.

00:46:18.090 --> 00:46:28.890 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: We have been talking, today, with my guests, Francis pit and we have been talking about the principles that Francis used in her business.

00:46:29.250 --> 00:46:29.910 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: To help.

00:46:30.000 --> 00:46:50.040 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Other individuals to bring about their greatness so Francis at our last few minutes together i'd love for you to talk about how can individuals or spiritual roots use the principles that you have to dismantle racism.

00:46:51.030 --> 00:46:56.640 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Thank you for that question because I really have a good example, I would like to share with you.

00:46:57.510 --> 00:47:15.630 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: In the early 70s, when I came to milwaukee and had finished graduate school I worked at a huge corporation, which was an insurance company, I was a financial planner at that time it was number five in the United States.

00:47:17.100 --> 00:47:23.640 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: In my region, it was 79 white males one Jewish woman and myself.

00:47:25.050 --> 00:47:39.570 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: So, on the first day of my employment there a white gentleman came into my office, he was the number one sales person making over 300,000 a year.

00:47:40.350 --> 00:47:57.390 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: A new who and what his goals were and he said to me, Francis and I would like to call his name, because he made a difference in my life His name was john mooney he said, Francis welcome to this company.

00:47:58.710 --> 00:48:03.540 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And if you have any issues or unfair treatment.

00:48:04.650 --> 00:48:15.210 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: I am just down the corner here my office is around the corner, to the left, if you have any issues come to me and I will work with you to solve folks.

00:48:15.750 --> 00:48:26.970 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: This man goes on to be my mentor he goes on to be my coach he goes with me to appointment so he's putting his words into action.

00:48:27.960 --> 00:48:40.080 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: So, and then, secondly, he said to me, you know I live in a neighborhood where the children, and most of the people never come in contact with like people.

00:48:40.800 --> 00:48:49.620 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Most of the children have not even seen alive like person he said, I would like to bring my Sunday school to your church one Sunday.

00:48:50.220 --> 00:49:16.950 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Less establish a date and do that which we did, and he was definitely a man of his word, so he came to our church and I expect maybe 510 15 kids in him to show up when we opened the door to let them in it was about 40 or 50 people from his Church and the locals call hills corner Wisconsin.

00:49:17.610 --> 00:49:25.200 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And they walk they walk then they want and then it and to take their seats, but everybody was amazed that so many of them came.

00:49:26.280 --> 00:49:42.300 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And then, after we had fellowship where they get to children get a chance to talk to other kids like his parents talk and it was a very good experience so when I say four people in large corporation This man was well liked.

00:49:43.350 --> 00:49:55.830 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: He was a man of honor so when you have people who step forward and say i'm willing to do this, to make sure your job involves the way you think it should.

00:49:56.370 --> 00:50:05.520 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Then you are actually doing the part when we say right words It started with his thoughts he had to think about it before he chose to come and announce themselves.

00:50:05.880 --> 00:50:07.320 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And now himself to me.

00:50:07.920 --> 00:50:18.180 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And then his conversation was, I am here to help whatever you need i'm here to be that person for you and then for feelings.

00:50:18.720 --> 00:50:31.830 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: He did not have to do a lot of talking but I knew if something happened, I could depend on him to be a resource, so he was being an example for the other 78 white males.

00:50:32.160 --> 00:50:34.110 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: In the organization of how.

00:50:34.380 --> 00:50:42.780 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: White and black could work together and how a white person could have a sister out on her first day on the job.

00:50:43.380 --> 00:51:04.980 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: So I see him doing every one of those steps he had right thoughts he had right words he had the right action reaction and feelings when people was in his presence, you could feel the energy of a person who wanted to make right wrongs that exists in the world.

00:51:05.340 --> 00:51:17.190 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: A person who is willing to step up and say I can afford to do this and I will be the example, so he wanted life to be good for himself and for others, which is a key part.

00:51:17.970 --> 00:51:27.600 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: or were there other examples of where maybe he stood up when there was an equity that was taken place.

00:51:28.680 --> 00:51:41.220 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: I can remember going to a place where the group was decided to go to lunch at that time, women and black women could not go into this place for lunch or anything really.

00:51:41.880 --> 00:51:43.500 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And he I remember him saying.

00:51:43.830 --> 00:51:50.100 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Well, if Francis cannot go i'm not going let's find a place and support a place where everybody.

00:51:50.400 --> 00:51:56.640 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: is welcome, so it was show up when it was when it was needed to show up you know.

00:51:56.880 --> 00:52:10.530 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: He wasn't like standing in his office and i'm the best salesperson i'm this i'm that he was out there daily living the LIFE to change how milwaukee was being at that particular time.

00:52:10.980 --> 00:52:24.480 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: And you know what and that so here's what's happening in that in that scenario it's bringing him to greatness is bringing other people to greatness but it's also showing that one person can make a difference, it.

00:52:25.230 --> 00:52:29.880 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Really, if we're going to dismantle racism, we need white people to step it up.

00:52:30.240 --> 00:52:30.960 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Right right.

00:52:31.530 --> 00:52:40.020 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: We need white people as allies and believe white people to say this is wrong, but uh well, not a Bud and.

00:52:40.320 --> 00:52:41.160 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Okay, we.

00:52:41.220 --> 00:52:54.180 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: also need leaders, people who are leaders in these organizations, because it flows down really from the traffic flows down from the people who are well liked and what I want.

00:52:54.660 --> 00:53:05.790 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: My listeners to know is that, in some ways we're all leaders, whether you are the top person or not you still can be a leader and you are a leader, but we do need those top.

00:53:06.990 --> 00:53:21.450 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: See old owners to say we are going to lead this organization and right actions and right reactions, because we know that people can react to.

00:53:22.260 --> 00:53:28.740 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: The conversation around racism by throwing money at it or saying we're going to promote someone.

00:53:29.400 --> 00:53:34.830 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Of color to certain positions, but then not give them the power that they need to do the work that they need.

00:53:35.250 --> 00:53:53.640 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: And so I love this idea of right reactions um I wanted to ask you, Francis because you know we're nearing the end of our show here um, are there any other things that you would like to share with our audience before we have to end that we haven't covered already.

00:53:54.780 --> 00:54:10.350 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Well, my seminar is entitled the greatness, you are seeking is also seeking you and a good example of that was my first business that I owned, which was an outpatient mental health clinic.

00:54:11.820 --> 00:54:26.160 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: very young, at that time 2627 years old, but the entrepreneurial spirit, just runs in our family and I came across a minister who spoke at a Community meeting.

00:54:26.850 --> 00:54:40.680 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And I said, let me follow him to his church that following Sunday, to see if he talks, the same way in his church and, of course, he did he was an advocate and he was a an Alderman in milwaukee.

00:54:41.850 --> 00:55:02.220 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: But when we open the clinic we needed a psychiatrist we needed a psychologist we need it all msw social workers, he reached out to a psychiatrist, believe it or not, a Christian psychology is a white man and this and we met with him and he said young lady you all are so young.

00:55:03.240 --> 00:55:13.020 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: And I don't really know what you are about to do, but I want you to know I support you and I will provide the 20 hours a psychic psychiatric.

00:55:13.530 --> 00:55:28.650 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: psychiatry work per month, he also found and located the psychologist that would do the 20 hours per month referred us to m s w degreed individuals to work on our staff.

00:55:29.160 --> 00:55:42.090 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Now these are two white males in great positions but chose to have a black agency, it was me and another partner, so I do believe that when we were reaching out to.

00:55:42.480 --> 00:55:48.480 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: Create that clinic we didn't know where we would find that psychiatrists we didn't know where the psychologists would come from.

00:55:48.870 --> 00:56:08.790 Frances Pitt Speaks, LLC: But that's the part where the universe sends you what you need in the process of creating your dream and we work together for over 10 years in that capacity in them serving us those number of hours that was required per month to run that clinic.

00:56:09.300 --> 00:56:33.540 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: So the The lesson, also in what you just said is this as well that, even though we as people of color face racism um what we also have to realize is that God the universe universe source provides for us as well and that their hands out there that are reaching towards us.

00:56:33.840 --> 00:56:40.980 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: Right have to reach back so that's another lesson in this as well that, just because we were born into a systemic.

00:56:41.640 --> 00:56:52.320 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: To a society where systemic racism exists, it does not mean that we cannot flourish and so I want our listeners out there to know that and to be aware of it, we have barriers for sure.

00:56:53.520 --> 00:56:57.210 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: We can overcome those Francis it's been a delight to have you.

00:56:57.720 --> 00:57:03.300 Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery: On our show today tell us really quickly how our audience can get in touch with you.
