This first episode of Frank About Health is a return to where it all began, where the first episode in 2016 featured a long discussion with Danielle Swanson on Epilepsy, living with Epilepsy, the ongoing testing and treatments available for patients with epilepsy where we continue to discuss how to maintain quality of life.
It is only fitting to relaunch the show with a follow-up on that initial interview with Danielle as she also talks about living with epilepsy during the COVID 19 Pandemic and while using Cannabis as her primary treatment modality.
Her YouTube Channel on Epilepsy is called Epilepsy Awareness With Dani.

Frank introduces Danielle Swanson, and defines epilepsy for listeners. Danielle has been using cannabis as a mode of treatment, and she talks about this, as well as what it’s like to live with epilepsy during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2016, Dani sought to treat her epilepsy through yoga, and found it worked for a while, but the stress of teaching ended up making things worse. Frank talks about his own experience with epilepsy- he has been mostly seizure-free for years, except for one or two stress-related seizures. Frank talks about his desire to use his disability as a tool to be more empathetic to others.
Frank and Dani discuss how their lives have changed since the COVID-19 Pandemic. Dani talks about the advantages and disadvantages to living at home during the early days of quarantine. Frank talks about his experience having COVID, and suffering from the neurological symptoms of the illness. He feels that the pandemic stressed the importance of healthcare, and his advocacy for healthcare workers inspired him to re-launch Frank About Health. Frank talks about the goal of healing from COVID mentally because of PTSD that the pandemic may have given people; his goal is to move forward and adjust not to the way things were, but the way they will be. He urges listeners to get the vaccine, Pfizer specifically, since it helps comorbid illnesses.
Danielle discusses her experience with using Cannabis to treat her Epilepsy. The first time she tried it in 2017, Dani used recreational marijuana, specifically the kind with THC. Later on, she tried medical marijuana for epilepsy, and discusses the pros and cons of the Indica and Sativa strains, since she uses both. Danielle recommends medical marijuana for it’s natural properties, and because it can also help to treat anxiety, and bipolar disorder.
Frank closes by urging listeners to use their own health issues in order to help others, and to put a positive spin on their struggles, whether because of Epilepsy, COVID-19, or any other illness. He mentions Orrin Devinsky, a neurologist specialising in epilepsy treatments, and praises the work he’s done to legalise medical marijuana in New York. He mentions that Danielle is going to be a regular consultant on Frank About Health, in order to give information specifically regarding Epilepsy in future episodes.
