2020/06/04 - The Courage to Pursue the Truth

[NEW EPISODE] The Courage to Pursue the Truth

This week on Voices of Courage, host Ken D. Foster is joined by Jim Higdon, the co-founder of Cornbread Hemp and Lynne Golodner, a long-time entrepreneur, author, and teacher of writing who has a passion for telling stories of how people find meaning in the mundane, to discuss pursuing our inner truth and making life choices from a place of courage and love.

Jim discusses the growth of the hemp industry, how the stigma around CBD products is rapidly changing, and how consumers can educate themselves about the use and benefits of CBD products. Lynne shares the importance of finding our meaning and using that to drive our work, career moves, and overall happiness.

Segment 1

Ken opens the show by explaining that political agendas obscure the truth, and that a leader who guides with wisdom and truth is more powerful than one who relies on fear  and chasing re-election. Ask yourself who you are at the core of your being, and evaluate whether you are following your own inner wisdom.  Don’t let other people’s agendas cloud your judgment and do what you truly believe is right.

Segment 2

Ken introduces Jim Higdon, cofounder of Cornbread Hemp, the first Kentucky company that offers USDA certified organic CBD products, Jim explains how he got the name of his company from a historic marijuana syndicate that was arrested in his Kentucky hometown: the Cornbread Mafia. He started his company when he saw an opportunity to embrace the hemp-growing history in Kentucky instead of shying away from it.

A Consumer Reports poll found that CBD users buy the product to relieve pain, anxiety, and insomnia. There’s also been studies regarding an endocannabinoid system in the human body, where CBD (in moderation) activates receptors that help put other systems in balance, particularly the wake-sleep cycle. Cornbread Hemp sets itself apart by reaching the standards of the USDA organic program to ensure a pure, clean, and safe product. At Cornbread Hemp, you can find USDA certified organic CBD oils, full spectrum CBD creams and lotions, CBD capsules, and CBD products for pets.

Segment 3

Ken introduces Lynne Golodner, the founder of Make Meaningful Movement, an organization that aims to educate leaders on the topics of storytelling and meaning-driven leadership through practical steps. Lynne’s business grew out of her podcast, Make Meaning. Ken asks Lynne, how does someone pivot his or her career to introduce meaning? Have an honest conversation with yourself – what do you love to do? Figure that out first, then you can think about how to make money off of your skills, interests, and beliefs. Try to find work that matters, where you can make a difference with your unique skills.

Once you find your meaning, you should think about drafting a meaning proposition. For example: I was born to use words and stories to make others happy.  This proposition will help you conceive opportunities that can make you happy and fulfilled. Shift your perspective from moneymaking to finding value – once you find value, the money will come.

Segment 4

Ken asks Lynne, are the questions of money and getting by what stop people from following their meaning through work? Fear is often what holds us back, but if you think of the limited time you have to on Earth and the example you set for your children’s future happiness, you might be ready to take a leap. Stick with it and patiently search for an opportunity.

Ken asks Lynne what was the most courageous thing she’s done in her life. Lynne explains that she was recently divorced and working as a journalist during the 2008 economic crash, she took a leap and created a marketing and PR company. She says it has made her a better parent, with the ability to work from home and to inspire her kids to follow their meaning. They are her value, so she found a job she enjoys that allows her to spend time with them.

To contact Linda, you can visit her website MakeMeaning.org and her marketing company’s site Yourppl.org. She is also on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Let her know if you found her through Voices of Courage!
